1. Apple pie

Let’s begin with the all American apple pie! This is a simple dessert with the goodness of apples and sweetness of sugar.

You will need:

  • 4 large, red apples
  • 1 package ready-to-use pie crust (double crust)
  • ¼ cup white sugar
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup water
  • 6 tbsp unsalted butter
  • Pinch of salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon

How to:

  1. Cut the apples in half, core them, and cut them into thin slices.
  2. Preheat the oven to 425°F.
  3. Heat a saucepan to melt the butter. Stir in the white and the brown sugar, cinnamon, and water. Bring it to a boil to dissolve the sugar and take it off heat.
  4. Take a pie crust and press them into a nine-inch pie dish and put the apple slices into it.
  5. Take the other pie crust and cut it into one-inch strips. Arrange them in a criss-cross fashion over the apple pieces and press the edges, while crimping the edges of the bottom crust to the pan.
  6. Pour spoonfuls of the sugar syrup on the pie, letting it drizzle down to the bottom.
  7. Bake the pie for 15 minutes and reduce the temperature to 350°F and bake for another 35-40 minutes, or until the crust turns golden brown and is set.

2. Microwave brownie

If you’ve been thinking about easy microwave dessert recipes for kids, try this one straight from the US. It takes no more than a couple of minutes.

You will need:

  • ¼ (40g) cup flour (self-raising)
  • ¼ (60g) cup caster sugar
  • 2 tbsp cocoa
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 tbsp (60ml) water
  • ½ tsp icing sugar

How to:

  1. Add all the ingredients, except icing sugar, in a microwave-safe cup.
  2. Mix them properly until the mixture becomes smooth.
  3. Microwave it for one minute 40 seconds.
  4. Take it out and sprinkle some icing sugar.

Serve immediately.

3. Flan

From the US, we move down south to Mexico to try the traditional caramel flan. While this is not a quick-fix dessert like the microwave brownie, it is an excellent option for a special occasion.

You will need:

  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
  • 3 eggs, slightly beaten
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • A pinch of salt
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

How to:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. In a saucepan, heat the sugar and stir it into a syrup, until it turns golden brown. Divide the sugar syrup among four 6oz baking cups. Use a brush to coat the inside of the cups with the sugar syrup and let it dry.
  3. In another bowl, mix the remaining ingredients and pour the mixture into the prepared cups.
  4. Take a 9×9×2 inch baking tray and pour very hot water, up to half-an-inch, in it. Place it on an oven rack and place the cups in it.
  5. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes or until the crust in the center is fully cooked (insert a knife in the center and it should come out clean).
  6. Invert the cup on to a plate and serve warm. You can also refrigerate for eight hours and unmold it before serving.

4. Tembleque (Puerto Rican Style Coconut Pudding)

You will need:

  • 7oz coconut cream
  • 2 ½ cups milk
  • 4 tbsp sugar
  • ½ cup cornstarch
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Ground cinnamon for topping
  • Crushed pistachios, almonds and other nuts

How to:

  1. Combine coconut cream, milk, cornstarch, sugar, and vanilla in a saucepan and mix well.
  2. Cook it on medium heat, while stirring continuously, until the mixture starts to boil and becomes thick.
  3. Let it boil for two minutes and remove the mixture in a dessert bowl.
  4. Garnish with cinnamon powder and nuts, and serve.

5. Platanos maduros

Another Puerto Rican sweet treat you can try is the platanos maduros, or sweet fried plantains.

You will need:

  • 3 Plantains or bananas (fully ripened)
  • Vegetable oil to fry
  • Salt to taste

How to:

  1. Pick yellow or blackened bananas for a sweeter taste.
  2. Peel the bananas. Cut each banana into two and then into thin slices.
  3. Heat oil in a deep frying pan. Drop the plantain slices into the oil and fry until they turn dark golden.
  4. Remove from oil and dab with a paper towel, and move it onto a plate.
  5. Sprinkle with salt and serve.

This sweet and savory dish also doubles as a snack, but may not be ideal for regular consumption, considering the number of calories it packs.

6. Jamaican Gizzada

You will need:

  • 2 cups plain flour
  • 1 ½ cups grated coconut
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 ½lb brown sugar
  • 1oz butter
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg powder
  • 1 tsp shortening
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • Ice water

How to:

  1. Combine sugar and water in a saucepan and bring it to a boil, to make a syrup.Add grated coconut and nutmeg and continue stirring. Let it boil for 15 minutes.
  2. Stir in the two tablespoons of butter and stir for six more minutes. Take it off heat and allow it to cool.
  3. Preheat an oven to 350°F and grease a baking tray with some butter.
  4. For the pastry, sift the flour and salt into a bowl. Add the butter and shortening and mix well. Add the ice water to make a smooth dough and refrigerate the dough for 20 minutes.
  5. Flour the surface and roll the dough flat, using a roller pin. Cut out circles from the flattened dough and place in the greased baking tin.
  6. Bake for 15 minutes. Fill the pastry bases with the coconut syrup and bake for another 20 minutes.
  7. Serve warm.

7. Churros

Churros are sweet finger foods from Spain. Make them once, and you can snack on them for an entire week.

You will need:

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup water
  • ½ cup white sugar, for taste
  • 2 quarts of oil, for frying
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 ½ tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon powder

How to:

  1. Combine two and a half tablespoons of sugar with water, vegetable oil, salt, and water in a saucepan and cook over medium heat. Stir it well and bring it to a boil.
  2. Take the mixture off the heat and stir in the flour, to make a dough.
  3. Heat oil in a deep skillet for frying.
  4. Use a pastry bag to pipe the dough into the hot oil and fry until they turn golden brown.
  5. Transfer the churros to a paper towel to drain the oil. Let them cool.
  6. Mix the remaining sugar and cinnamon powder and roll the churros in it.

Store in an airtight container and enjoy for over a week.

8. Yogurt and fruit parfait

  • 1 pint fresh blueberries, raspberries, or blackberries
  • 1 cup granola

  1. Take four clear glasses or mugs. Layer one-third of the cup with fresh yogurt.
  2. Combine the fresh berries and crumble the granola bars.
  3. Add a layer of fruit on top of the yogurt, followed by the granola.
  4. Top that with yogurt until the glasses are full.

You will need:

  • 6 slices of stale bread
  • 3 eggs, separated
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 4 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 jar of cherries (28oz), drained
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1-2 powdered sugar

How to:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Grease a 9×12 casserole dish with butter.
  2. Slice the bread and put them in a bowl. Pour the milk into the bowl and stir gently.
  3. In another bowl, mix the egg yolks, granulated sugar, and cinnamon. Gently stir in the milk soaked bread, and cherries.
  4. In a small bowl, whip egg whites and salt until stiff.
  5. Fold the egg whites into the milk and bread mixture and pour it into the greased casserole dish.
  6. Smooth the top of the casserole and bake for 40 minutes or until it turns brown.
  7. Let it cool before serving.

10. Chia seeds pudding

Chia seeds pudding is one of the healthiest Italian dessert that you can make in a short time.

You will need:

  • 1 cup almond milk, unsweetened
  • 1 cup plain yogurt, low-fat
  • 2 tbsp pure maple syrup, plus 4 more for dressing
  • ¼ cup chia seeds
  • 1 tsp vanilla syrup
  • 1 cup strawberries, hulled and chopped
  • ½ cup sliced almonds
  • Salt to taste

How to:

  1. In a bowl, whisk the almond milk, yogurt, salt, two tablespoons maple syrup, and chia seeds. Let it sit for half hour.
  2. Stir to evenly distribute the seeds, if they have settled at the bottom. Cover with a lid and refrigerate for a day.
  3. Before serving it the next day, toss in strawberries, almonds, and remaining maple syrup in a bowl.
  4. Distribute the chia seed mix into four glasses, top each with a spoon of the almond and strawberry mix and serve.

11. Basic meringues

Meringue is a traditional dessert made from egg whites and sugar, and often a part of the Italian cuisine. This recipe teaches you to make mini meringue drops that melt in your mouth.

You will need:

  • 4 egg whites (room temperature)
  • 1 cup caster sugar (220g)
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • Salt to taste

How to:

  1. Preheat the oven to 250°F.
  2. Whisk the egg whites and salt using an electric mixer until you get foamy peaks.
  3. Whisk in the sugar, one tablespoon at a time, and mix until the sugar dissolves.
  4. Continue whisking it for another three minutes and then stir in the vanilla.
  5. Line two baking trays with baking paper.
  6. Use a tablespoon to add drops of meringue to the baking tray.
  7. Bring the oven temperature to 195°F and bake for an hour and thirty minutes.
  8. Let the meringues cool completely.

These tiny sugar drops can be consumed for a week if stored in an air-tight container.

12. Irish apple cake

You will need:

  • 1 cup plain flour
  • 4 red apples, peeled, cored, and diced
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 4 tbsp butter, room temperature
  • ¼ cup walnuts, chopped
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp nutmeg powder

How to:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Grease an eight-inch square pan generously.
  3. In a bowl, combine the sugar, and butter and whisk till it becomes creamy.
  4. Whisk in the egg, the nuts, apples, and vanilla.
  5. Sift the flour, baking powder, baking soda, nutmeg and cinnamon powder, and salt, and add them to the creamy mixture. Mix well.
  6. Pour the batter into the greased pan and bake for 45 minutes, or until the cake is well done.
  7.  Remove from the oven and let it cool in the pan.
  8. Remove from the pan and top it with whipped vanilla cream or icing and serve.

Desserts from Asia

13. Rice pudding/porridge

One of the easiest Japanese desserts you can make when you have rice, sugar, and milk at home is the rice porridge. If you are not a rice eater, you can use tapioca pearls, or semolina instead. We have also used almond milk instead of dairy for kids who are lactose-intolerant.

You will need:

1 ½ cups sushi rice
1/3 cup sugar
7 cups unsweetened almond milk
Pinch of salt
¼ tsp cinnamon powder

How to:

1. In a saucepan, combine rice, sugar, and one cup of almond milk. Cook over low heat and stir it to a boil.
2. Let it cook until the rice absorbs all the almond milk. Add half-a-cup of almond milk and stir it again, until absorbed. Add five cups of the milk gradually, in this fashion.
3. Cook the milk and rice until you get a creamy mix, then take it off heat.
4. Let it cool and add the remaining cup of almond milk.
5. Sprinkle cinnamon powder and serve warm.

14. Toasted coconut laddoo

Ladoos are popular sweet treats in India and loved by all who have a sweet tooth. This recipe uses coconut and vegan alternatives that make it healthier and tastier as well.

You will need:

  • 1 ½ cups finely shredded fresh coconut
  • 1 cup coconut cream, or full-fat coconut cream
  • 1/3 cup sugar or jaggery powder
  • Ground cardamom
  • Pinch of salt

How to:

  1. In a skillet, dry roast the shredded coconut on medium heat. Roast for three to four minutes or until the coconut (most of it) turns golden brown.
  2. Add the coconut milk or cream to the toasted coconut and cook for two minutes.
  3. Add the salt and sugar and stir. Add the cardamom powder.
  4. Let it cook on medium heat until the coconut mixture completely absorbs the milk or cream. When you squeeze the mixture with a spoon, there shouldn’t be any milk or creamy liquid.
  5. Let it cool down to room temperature and then make balls out of it.

You can keep it for a week when stored in an airtight container or the refrigerator.

15. Atta ka halwa

Halwa is an Indian sweet dish made with wheat or white flour, sugar, and dry fruits. One of the easier dishes, halwa is a common dish but not something you must indulge in often if made of white flour.

You will need:

  • ½ cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/3 cup clarified butter, or canola oil
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 2 cups water
  • ¼ cup raisins
  • 2 tbsp sliced almonds
  • 1 tbsp pistachios for garnishing
  • ¼ tsp ground cardamom

How to:

  1. Boil water and sugar in a pan over medium heat, until the sugar is completely dissolved. Take it off the heat and set it aside.
  2. Melt the clarified butter (or heat canola oil) in a frying pan. Stir in the wheat flour and mix well. Roast the flour until it turns light golden brown and emits a sweet aroma.
  3. Stir in the sugar syrup slowly and then mix slowly, to ensure there are no lumps. Add the raisins, cardamom powder, and half the almonds. Stir until you get the desired consistency.
  4. The halwa will become harder after it cools, so let the halwa be slightly softer than the consistency you want before taking it off the heat.
  5. Garnish with remaining pistachios and almonds. Serve warm.

16. Halayang ube

A traditional Filipino delicacy, The Halayang Ube is made of purple yam and packed with nutrients.

You will need:

  • 16oz purple yam (1 package thawed, purple yam), grated
  • 1 cup unsweetened condensed milk
  • 2 cups coconut milk
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

How to:

  1. Combine the coconut milk, condensed milk, sugar, and vanilla extract in a pot and cook it on medium flame.
  2. Keep stirring the mixture until the sugar dissolves. Bring it to a boil.
  3. Add the grated yam to the milk mixture and continue stirring for 30 minutes, or until the mixture becomes sticky and the raw yam smell disappears.
  4. Transfer the mixture into a glass and let it cool.
  5. Garnish with nuts if you like, and serve.

17. Chocolate coated hina arare

Hina arare is more of a sweet snack than an after-meal dessert. This dish is made during the Japanese dolls festival that falls in March every year.

  • 50g cream cheese
  • 50g melted white chocolate
  • 30g hina arare (bite-sized Japanese cracker)

How to:

  1. If you have a slab of chocolate, melt it in a boiler over hot water. Let it sit for a few seconds and mix well.
  2. Mix the cream cheese to the chocolate and mix.
  3. Add in the hina arare and stir to mix it.
  4. Mold the mixture into eight small balls and refrigerate them until they are set.

Store in an air-tight container for longer shelf-life.

18. Tang Yuan

Tang yuan can be sweet or tangy. This Indonesian recipe is for the rice dumplings in sweet ginger broth.

You will need:

  • ½ cup rice flour
  • 1/3 cup cane sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 2 tsp grated ginger
  • 2-3 drops of food colors – red, yellow and pink

How to:

  1. Add the cane sugar and ginger to a thick bottomed pan. Add one and a quarter cup of water and cook on medium flame till the liquid comes to a boil. Boil it for three to four minutes or until you get a sweet aroma from it.
  2. Meanwhile, combine the rice flour and remaining water (add little by little) and knead it for at least two to three minutes, until you get a smooth dough.
  3. Divide the dough into three parts and add a few drops of food color to each. Make one-centimetre rounds of the dough and ensure that there are no cracks in them.
  4. Gently drop the flour balls into the boiling sugar syrup and let them boil on low heat, for a few more minutes or until the rice balls are cooked (they should float in the syrup).
  5. Remove from heat and take out the ginger pieces. Serve warm or cold.

19. Sweet potatoes in syrup

Potatoes may not be as healthy as we’d like them to be. But sweet potatoes are and can be used to make a healthy dessert recipe for the kids, just like the Chinese do.

You will need:

  • 2 sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed or cut into rounds
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup orange juice
  • ¼ cup butter

How to:

  1. Boil the sweet potatoes or bake them at 350°F to soften them.
  2. Melt butter in a frying pan and add sugar. Heat it until the syrup starts bubbling. Add the orange juice and stir for a few minutes.
  3. Add the boiled potatoes to the pan and cook slowly, until they have been caramelized.
  4. You can add more brown sugar if the syrup is not thick or sweet enough.

Serve warm.
